The world is getting deforested due to rapid developmental activities and the natural wealth of mother Earth is being depleted day by day. To accommodate the so called modern civilization for which the price is reduced greenery, the globe is heating up which may be irreversible soon. That is why plantation to replace the loss of greenery came automatically to our minds to start with our small journey of “ Let us do something for the society”. We started our social obligation with a Plantation Program in our dear Assam Engineering college on the day of our Silver Jubilee celebration and felt what can be more appropriate than this. We did it by paying due attention to what type of plant will be perfect to suit a particular location, bamboo structures to protect the saplings from damage by animals and an arrangement for sufficient watering for a couple of months, In presence of our former Professors within the AEC campus on . Thereafter plantation drives with suitable fruit and flower bearing or medicinal plants become very frequent and important part in our journey of social welfare activities. We did plantations at Kulsi river bank, 27 km from Mirza, Mitani Rewa village near Khetri, Sati Radhika Udyan at Ujanbazar River side, Near Phulaguri, Nagaon, Near Sipajhar, Nalbari Polytechnic and inside the campus of Sankardeva Kalakshetra, Panjabari to cite a few. We are now looking forward to carry out Plantation program in a much more larger scale and more frequently.
It gives us immense pleasure to do something for Assam Engineering College (AEC) however little it may be. We decided to start with a Scholarship of Rs. 30,000/- to Rs 40,000/- to a meritorious but under privileged student. In 2015 and 2016 it was sponsored by our Batch mate Sri Pearl Pratim Bezbaruah who is pursuing his professional career in Oman. Along with this we decided to provide another Award of Rs.25,000/- to Rs.30,000/-for most innovative project to recognise a student for his/ her hard work and encourage their talents to even greater efforts for a higher goal. Since then we have been continuing our job of awarding Scholarships to AECians for the last eight years. Our batchmate Sri Trinayan Kr. Bora who has settled in the USA has been solely offering sponsorship for this scholarship for the past 4 years. In this way these two batchmates have been playing a very positive and encouraging role in helping our group to continue with various social welfare activities. We also conducted a cleanliness drive of AEC campus by cleaning of the big pond in front of the Hostel no 5 and 6. We did this job for two consecutive years at the cost of Rs.2,00,000/-. By doing this we also tried to stop the encroachments on the AEC campus near the South sides of the pond bank. As recently as on 02/04/2022 our group sponsored the Prize money of the Quiz completion held during the yearly event of the AEC called PYROKINESIS.
It is very hard to implant the idea of entrepreneurship in the mind of the general people and youth in particular. Though the village community with joint family system mostly are cultivators, still the idea of self reliance is yet to see the light of the day. As most people are interested only for govt jobs, it is very necessary for well wishers of the society to advocate for the development of the sense of entrepreneurship among the common people and our group felt the need to intervene in this matter from the last 3 years. Taking the first baby steps, we provided 5 sewing machines to the village women of Deulkuchi . We also arranged training for cutting, tailoring and embroidery for three months. We also donated a couple of weaving unit with jacker machine along with necessary training. We also tried to promote Eri cultivation which can be a unique source of earning. We tried to help by providing technical kit and knowledge. In September 2021 we started distribution of Weaving unit with Jacker machine in the village area of Chaigaon. They were provided adequate training with an experienced trainer for a month. The Tribal ladies of the area are now weaving hand towels/ gamosa with different designs and have been earning by selling their products. We have also provided weaving and sewing machines in Khetri and Noonmati to the village areas through an NGO ” Priyo Bondhu”. Training has been going on with the help of experienced trainer.
In Deulkuchi we initiated a free eye check up camp along with blood pressure, sugar check ups. Free medicines were provided to the villagers who were suffering from various ailments. Moreover a number of villagers found with eye disorders later went to Guwahati for minor eye surgery as suggested by the Doctors during our free check up. Thus they were benefited and had their operations done at the right time.
This is one area we always wanted to contribute positively with our limited resources. In Deulkuchi village near Rangia town school going girls and young ladies were given different training, Eri Muga cultivation tips, embroidery and cutting tailoring training, Yoga training, plantation training etc. Along with these to propagate the ideal of a healthy mind in a healthy body games and competitions were conducted in Deulkuchi for boys and girls. Mini Marathon , Long Jump, 100 meter race were held to instil the sportsman spirit and the idea of competitiveness. This was a very enthusiastically welcomed by the people. We also invited Archana Bothakur, mentor of NGO “ Priyo Bondhu” who has for long been working very hard to teach lessons of life to the roadside under privileged women who were struggling to feed their families, let alone the idea of any education for their children. “Priyo Bondhu” taught them how to live with cleanliness with healthy habit and taught them to make small things like ear rings, bengles, small bags etc and to sell them and earn something. She was felicitated with an honorarium along with some other useful things for the destitute children under the care of her NGO. We also felicited Dr Purnima Devi Barman known as the Hargilla Baideu with honorarium. She is the only woman of India who won Green Oscar for her contribution to save Greater Adjutant Stork/ Hargilla. She along with her NGO ” Aranyak” has been serving for conservation of these birds relentlessly. She was also felicitated along with an honorarium from our side.
